As if you needed another reason to give your very good girl or boy a special treat, Saturday is National Dog Day, which means dog-centric deals and promotions from retailers nationwide.
National Dog Day was founded in 2004 by pet and family lifestyle expert Colleen Paige, according to Nationaldogday.com. Paige, a conservationist and author, has also founded other holidays such as National Puppy Day, National Mutt Day and National Cat Day.
Paige created the the holidays to "bring attention to the plight of animals around the globe and encourage adoption," the website says, estimating that millions of unwanted pets have been saved as a result.
National Dog Day is celebrated Aug. 26 every year because it is the date that Paige's family adopted her first dog, "Sheltie," from the local animal shelter when Paige was just 10 years old.
Here are some National Dog Day deals to help you celebrate your canine companion.

These dogs perform a range of tasks that help medical teams achieve their clinical goals, like keeping a child calm during a medical intervention or providing an incentive for a child to get out of bed and go for a walk, according to the program's website.
